Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To make it possible to roughen a rail surface of a slider efficiently by a method wherein a magnetic pole end face of a magnetic head element and the vicinity thereof which are exposed on the rail surface are shielded by a metal plate and the other exposed rail surface is roughened by ion mill method. CONSTITUTION:In a thin-film magnetic head 6 constructed of a rail surface 5a of a slider made of a polycrystalline material, and of a magnetic head element 4 formed of a thin film on a vertical surface, a magnetic pole end face of the magnetic head element 4 and the vicinity thereof which are exposed on the rail surface 5a are shielded by a metal and the exposed rail surface 5a is roughened by an ion mill method. Since the slider is a polycrystalline body and a cutting speed by ion milling is different according to the orientation of each crystal, in this constitution, minute indentations are formed and the surface can be roughened efficiently.
