Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a self-emulsifiable type textile treating agent, composed of a specific alpha-sulfo-fatty acid derivative and capable of imparting excellent water repellency without impairing hand of fiber. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-sulfo-fatty acid derivative expressed by formula I (R us 6-25C alkyl or alkenyl; R is 2-4C alkylene or 2-4C alkylene having OH group as a substituent group; M is H, alkali metal, ammonium, etc.; Z is H, 1-25C alkyl, alkenyl or formula II; n is 0-50) is adsorbed on synthetic fiber, semisynthetic fiber, natural fiber, etc., to impart excellent water repellency thereto. Furthermore, the alpha-sulfo fatty acid derivative is synthesized by esterification reaction of an alpha-sulfo-fatty acid (e.g. alpha-sulfolauric acid) with an alcohol.
