Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To improve the display quality by equalizing the retardation of a 1st liquid crystal layer interposed between transparent electrodes in an unselected state, to the retardation of a 2nd liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:A voltage for driving all picture elements on a time-division basis or a voltage for driving picture elements at intersections of the transparent electrodes 8 and 9 selectively is applied from an electrode 14 to the transparent electrodes 8 and 9. In this 1st liquid crystal layer 7 which is driven on the time-division basis, the bias voltage is also applied between transparent electrodes 8 and 9 in an area where picture elements are not selected, and a power source 22 applies a voltage between transparent electrodes 11a and 11b so that the retardation of the 1st liquid crystal layer 7 in the unselected state comes to equal to the retardation of the 2nd liquid crystal layer 20. Consequently, a coloring phenomenon is eliminated and a high contrast is obtained.
