PURPOSE:To prepare uniform, porous, and spherical carbon, by granulating a petroleum aromatic resin substance obtained from a proper petroleum fraction, extracting and removing a low-molecular-weight component from it to give a porous resin substance, making the substance infusible, calcining it in an inert atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A fraction rich in aromatic components obtained by extraction from a petroleum fraction having 150-850 average molecular weight with furfural, phenol, or methylpyrrolidone is brought into contact with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas or a gas containing oxygen and ozone at 200-380 deg.C, it is dehydrogenated, and subjected to polycondensation, to give a petroleum aromatic resin substance having 80-220 deg.C softening point.
