A process for the preparation of N-alkyl-anilines of the general formula (1) see diagramm : EP0096815,P3,F1 in which R1 , R2 and R3 denote the methyl or ethyl group, which comprises subjecting a compound of the general formula (2) see diagramm : EP0096815,P3,F2 in which R denotes the amino or nitro group and R3 denotes the methyl or ethyl group, to reductive alkylation with an aliphatic carbonyl compound of the formula (3) see diagramm : EP0096815,P4,F3 in which R1 and R2 have the abovementioned meanings, in the presence of an acid reaction accelerator and a nickel catalyst at temperatures of 100-180 degrees C under a hydrogen pressure of 20-150 bar.
