Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To finish a sliding member into a smooth surface reduced in friction with a mating material by forming a nitride surface layer on the surface of a sliding member made of alloy steel, exerting mechanical polishing, further forming an oxide surface layer composed essentially of Fe3O4 on the above, and performing mechanical polishing again. CONSTITUTION:The surface of an alloy steel product, such as piston rod used for a hydraulic bumper, is subjected to rough machining by means of a cutting tool and a file and then to buffing. An Fe nitride layer is formed on the surface of the piston rod by heating this piston rod in an atmosphere containing NH3 gas. After polishing is applied to this nitride layer by a mechanical means, such as lapping, to smooth the surface, an oxide-enriched layer composed essentially of Fe3O4 is formed on the surface of the nitride surface layer by means of heating in steam and then the surface of this oxygen-enriched layer is finished again by means of buffing, etc., by which the piston rod having smooth surface reduced in friction with cylinder can be produced.
