Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To form a high quality homogeneous chromate film hardly causing exfoliation on an Al-based material by regulating the electric potential of the material in a bath at the time of chromating with chromic acid and controlling the amt. of a chromate film formed. CONSTITUTION:When an Al-based material is chromated with chromic acid, the electric potential of the Al alloy in a chromating bath is regulated and the amt. of a chromate film formed is controlled. The compsn. and pH of the bath, the chromating temp. and time are also regulated as usual and the electric potential is regulated with an external power source or a metal different from the Al alloy in natural electrode potential. A homogeneous chromate film hardly causing exfoliation can stably be formed by easily regulating the electric potential in the bath.
