Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain bright images of a good contrast even with the optical modulation element of a light scattering type by disposing light shielding films of a two-layered structure consisting of a metallic film and a light absorbing film so as to include the parts facing semiconductors which form active elements on a counter substrate. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal resin composite 9 inserted between a display substrate 10 and the counter substrate 10' is formed by dispersing and holding a liquid crystal in a transparent resin and forming the resin matrix in such a manner that the refractive index thereof coincides nearly with the ordinary light refractive index of the liquid crystal to be used. The light shielding films made of the two-layered structure consisting of the metallic film 8 and the org. light shielding film 8' which is the light absorbing film are so formed on this counter substrate 10' as to include the parts facing semiconductors which form the active elements. The projected images of the good contrast are obtd. even if the optical modulation element is the optical modulation element of the light scattering type and is under irradiation with strong light when this optical modulation element is used for a display device of a projection type.
