Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent CSS characteristics from a simple production process by forming a protective layer comprising column-like grains the axis of which inclines from the normal line of a substrate to the relative advancing direction of a head to the substrate. CONSTITUTION:The medium consists of a substrate 1, magnetic layer 2 formed on the substrate 1, and a protective layer 3 on the layer 2. The protective layer consists of column-like grains the axis of which inclines from the normal line of a substrate to the relative advancing direction of a head to the substrate. Inclination of the grains from the normal line of the substrate to the relative advancing direction of a head is preferably 10 - 40 deg.. By this constitution, wearing due to the head is reduced and the obtd. magnetic recording medium has excellent CSS (contact-start-stop) characteristics.
