METHOD FOR REFINING AL-LI SERIES ALLOY

PURPOSE:To obtain the alloy including less impurities advantageously from the industrial viewpoint, at the time of refining an alloy, by using a vessel in which the parts to be brought into contact with the inner face of a melting furnace and a molten metal are constituted of specified refractories of Si3 N4, BN, AlN or the like and regulating the gas atmosphere into an inert one. CONSTITUTION:At the time of refining an Al-(1.5 to 3.0%) Li series alloy, a vessel in which the parts to be brought into contact with the inner face of a melting furnace and a molten metal are constituted of one kind among Si3 N4, BN, AlN, ZrB2, TiB2 and LiAlO2 is used. Then, the alloy is refined in a gas atmosphere (of Ar or He) inert against Li. By this method, the alloy having an extremely homogeneous compsn. in which the amt. of oxide inclusions is reduced and including less contamination such as oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen and excellent in properties such as strength can stably and easily be obtd.
