Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of erosion, cracks, etc., and to extend the life of the stirrer for pretreatment of a molten iron by incorporating a specific ratio of ZrO2 into the castable refractories which consist essentially of SiO2 and contain SiC for said stirrer. CONSTITUTION:The pretreatment such as desulfurizing or dephosphorizing of the molten iron is executed by stirring the molten iron by the stirrer 1 which consists of refractory vanes 5 stuck to the front end of a revolving shaft 2. The vanes 5 of the above-mentioned stirrer 1 are constituted of the castable refractories formed by using the SiO2 as the essential component and incorporating about 1-20% SiC therein. Further, a zirconia material is compounded with the castable refractories to incorporate 40-67% ZrO2 therein. The generation of the erosion, crack, etc., in the above-mentioned vanes 5 by slag is effectively prevented in this way and the life of the stirrer 1 is drastically extended.
