Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To facilitate detection regardless of the degrees of surface ruggedness by providing a pyroelectric type IR detecting means which detects the reflected IR rays reflected by an object to be measured and a moving speed calculating means which calculates the moving speed of the object to be measured. CONSTITUTION:The speed detector has an IR projecting means 6, the pyroelectric type IR detecting means 8 and the moving speed calculating means 10. The means 6 has a light emitting element and a driving circuit for the light emitting element and projects impulsive IR rays of a specified intensity and specified period toward a road surface 2 which is the object to be measured. The means 8 has a conversion circuit constituted of a pyroelectric type IR detecting element, resistor and FET and an optical filter, etc., and detects the IR rays which are irradiated from the means 6 and are reflected by the road surface 2. The means 10 calculates the moving speed of the road surface 2 in accordance with the detection sensitivity of the reflected IR rays from the road surface 2 by the means 8. The speed detection by the means 8 is executed by utilizing the thermal properties of the reflected IR rays and the thermal properties do not depend on the rugged state of the reflecting surface and, therefore, the moving speed is detected at all times regardless of the rugged state of the object to be measured.
