Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To improve efficiency by allowing the arbitrary number of channels less than M/2 channels to be used by switching a channel to (2m channels X1) not using ((m) channels X 2) in the case of performing recording by using (m) channels out of M channels of a head. CONSTITUTION:In a multi-channel recording system, the gaps of a magnetic head recording adjacent data are set at different azimuth angles with each other. When both the number M of heads and the number (m) of channels are even numbers or odd numbers, (m) heads in two head groups are used, respectively, and when one is an even number and the other is an odd number, only 2m heads in one head group are used. The switching of the head is performed by switches 106, 109, and 114, etc., via a control circuit 105. In such a manner, reverse azimuth between adjacent tracks on a magnetic tape can be always obtained, which allows the arbitrary number of channels to be used and improves the efficiency.
