Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain high durability without decreasing the recording/reproducing characteristics by forming a Cr nonmagnetic base layer and a magnetic layer of partial oxides of Fe and Co which have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy on a polymer film substrate. CONSTITUTION:The nonmagnetic base layer comprising a Cr layer is formed on a polymer film substrate such as a polyimide or polyethylene terephthalate film, on which the magnetic layer of Fe-Co partial oxides having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is formed. By this method, a perpendicular magnetic recording medium with excellent durability can be obtained without decreasing the recording/reproducing characteristics. To obtain further higher reproduction output, it is preferred to provide an intermediate metal layer comprising Fe-Co alloy between the magnetic layer and the nonmagnetic layer. The nonmagnetic base layer of Cr layer is preferably formed by sputtering in Ar gas at 5 to 20mTorr pressure.
