Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain an artificial medium having high water absorption, excellent fertilizer retention, water permeability, expansion and softness and mechanical properties, having ready waste treatment after use, convertible to soil as it is by treating peat with an alkaline substance, then blending the peat with a polymer binder, molding and solidifying. CONSTITUTION:Peat is treated with an alkaline substance, the prepared alkali treated peat is blended with a polymer binder (e.g. CMC, starch, PVA or sodium polyacrylate) and the blend is molded and solidified to give the aimed medium.
