MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PURPOSE:To reduce damage of a magnetic medium when a head touches, collides against or slides on the medium and to improve durability of the medium by providing a protective layer of a ceramic thin film essentially comprising borides or silicides on a ferromagnetic layer and further providing a lubricating layer comprising fluorocarbon lubricant. CONSTITUTION:The medium has a nonmagnetic body, the ferromagnetic layer provided thereon and then the protective layer 4 of ceramic thin film essentially comprising borides or silicides. Further, the lubricating layer 5 comprising fluorocarbon lubricant is provided on the protective layer 4. As the ceramic essentially comprising borides or silicides used for the protective layer 4 has high mechanical strength, the magnetic layer can be prevented from damaging caused by sliding of a magnetic head. Moreover, the fluorocarbon lubricant layer 5 on the protective layer 4 assures protection of the magnetic layer from damages caused by sliding of the head.
