Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To restrict a shortcircuit current at a low level by providing a current detecting means in a circuit for applying a current to an electrode of a DC arc furnace, and controlling an output current of a rectifier corresponding to an increase ratio of an overcurrent detected by this current detecting means. CONSTITUTION:An overcurrent is detected by a current detecting means 10 at the time of a shortcircuit in an arc furnace 9, and by seeing an increase ratio of this overcurrent, a contact condition of an electrode 3 with a scrap 4 can be detected. A thyrister of a rectifier 2 is controlled based on the increase ratio of the overcurrent to reduce an output of the rectifier 2 largely if the increase ratio is large, while it is reduced a little when the ratio is small, so a current in the middle of a shift can be reduced to a constant level in either case. A shortcircuit current produced at the time of a shortcircuit in the arc furnace 9 can be controlled to be at a low level.
