Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate of leuco dye safely at low cost and in high yield by alkylating m-aminophenol in the presence of a specific alcohol, alkylating agent and deoxidizer under atmospheric pressure at reflux temperature. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by formula I is alkylated in the presence of 1-4C alcohol (e.g., methanol, ethanol or propanol) by using 1-3mol, preferably 1-1.3mol butyl iodide as an alkylating agent based on 1 alkyl group to be introduced and an alkali metal carbonate (e.g., Na2CO3 or NaHCO3) as a deoxidizer under atmospheric pressure at a reflux temperature to give N-butyl-m- aminophenol shown by formula II (Bu is n-butyl).
