Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To reduce the height of an engine by a method wherein an output take-off shaft is disposed obliquely above a crank shaft, a cylinder is inclined based on a vertical direction, and a space between the cylinder and the output take-off shaft and a space therebelow are formed to place an oil tank in the spaces. CONSTITUTION:In a horizontal type engine 5 having a crank shaft 5c mounted on a vehicle in a state to extend in the direction of the width of a vehicle, an output take-off shaft 15 is positioned to the side of a crank shaft 5c and disposed obliquely above the crank shaft 5c. The output take-off shaft 15 is rotated through gears 17 and 16 by rotation of the crank shaft 5c, and the output take-off shaft 15 is connected to a cam shaft 14 of a tappet valve mechanism through a run-around transmission means containing first and second chains 26 and 28. Spaces are formed between the shaft 15 and a cylinder block 5d and under the shaft 15 and the cylinder block 5d, and an oil tank 19 is disposed in the spaces.
