Homopolymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile comprising up to 30 % by weight of comonomer units incorporated by polymersation, only comonomers free from ionic groups being used, characterized in that they have K-values of from 50 to 100, a dye absorption capacity for cationic dyes of at least 0.5 % by weight, a conductivity, measured in dimethylformamide solution, of at least 10 mu Siemens and contents of sulphur fixed in the polymers of from 0.2 to 1.5 % by weight in the case of copolymers and from 0.4 to 1.2 % by weight in the case of homopolymers.
