Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To isolate the title compound and also recover raw material thereof, by recrystallizing a crude product containing the title compound from a 5- halosalicylic acid lower alkyl ester and propionyl halide using a lower alkyl alcohol as a solvent for recrystallization. CONSTITUTION:When a 5-halosalicylic acid lower alkylester is subjected to Friedel-Crafts reaction with a propionyl halide to provide 5-halo-3- propionylsalicylic acid lower alkylester, a crude product containing the above- mentioned reaction product is recrystallized with a lower alkyl alcohol (especially, practically inexpensive methanol or isopropanol) to isolate 5-halo-3- propionylsalicylic acid lower alkylester and further recover unreacted 5- halosalicylic acid lower alkylester. According to the above-mentioned method, the product is obtained in high purity and high yield by utilizing the difference of solubility between the raw material and product and expensive unreacted raw material can be recovered.
