PURPOSE:To eliminate an over load on recording elements by causing the recording elements to change at random and thereby allowing the position of the recording elements for recording data at an upper end which follows a blank line to be changed. CONSTITUTION:A control part 2 stores space in the position of elements of a recording head 6 with a plurality of recording elements in a vertical scan direction, into an image buffer memory 3, and eliminates the drive of recording elements other than those corresponding to the total number of receiving and recording elements. In this case, a data converter counter 5-1, a head address register 5-2 and an upper end position register 5-3 are provided in a data converter 5. In addition, an active or not register 7-1 is provided in a driver 7 so that whether the recording elements of the recording head 6 may be driven or not can be set. In this way, an over-load on the recording elements is uniformized and a space line need not be stored in the image buffer memory. Thus recording velocity is further increased.
