Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To nearly flatten transmittance characteristics with respect to wavelengths and to obtain a good black and white display with an SBE type liquid crystal cell by providing a film sheet which exhibits optical uniaxially within an intra-surface direction to at least either of a spacing between an analyzer and electrode substrate, etc. CONSTITUTION:The upper glass substrate 1 and the lower glass substrate 2 constitute a pair of electrode substrates. Transparent electrodes 4, 5 are formed on the rear face of the substrate 1 and the front face of the substrate 2 and oriented films 6, 7 are respectively formed on the surfaces of the electrodes 4, 5. A liquid crystal layer 8 exists between these films 6, 7. The layer 8 is a nematic layer having positive dielectric constant anisotropy and is held in place between the layers 6, 7 in such a manner that the liquid crystal molecules have the signal structure twisted at the twist angle larger than 90 deg. in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer. A compensation plate 3 is formed between this substrate 1 and the analyzer 9 or between a deflector 10 and the substrate 2 and the film sheet exhibiting the optical uniaxially in the intra- surface direction is provided thereto, by which the transmittance characteristics are nearly flattened with respect to the wavelengths.
