PURPOSE:To recognize even an object whose size and attitude are unknown on condition that it is the same model and to correctly recognize even an object in a complicated background. CONSTITUTION:A conversion part 12 which converts a series of evaluation points into a similar model or rotated model is added to a conventional recognition device which recognizes an image by contrasting directional features extracted from an input image 2 by parallel arithmetic with a model 1 represented as a series of evaluation points, and then the object 2 whose size and attitude are unknown can be recognized. Further, the device is provided with means (8, 9, etc.) which extracts nondirectional features from the model 1 to evade misrecognition due to strongly directional features extracted from the complicated background, thereby enabling correct recognition.
