PURPOSE:To recognize a character in accordance with the difference of reading density depending on an individual facsimile by providing marks showing several kinds of density at the heading part of a character recognition sheet and executing a corresponding recognition pre-processing. CONSTITUTION:A facsimile scans the character recognition sheet and transmits a facsimile signal to a facsimile interface part. The facsimile interface part fetches a picture signal and stores it in a buffer memory part. When the storage of the picture signal is finished, a density mark detection part fetches the picture signal from the buffer memory to detect a start mark and density marks 103 to 105. Then, when the detection result by the density mark detection part is a pattern 1, a recognition impossible report preparation part 205 prepares a sentence reporting that the character recognition sheet can not be read and sends it back to a source by way of the facsimile interface part. When the detection result by the density mark detection part is patterns 2 to 4, pre- processing parts A206, B207 and C208 are respectively selected.
