PURPOSE:To objectively read and evaluate a state of the skin by obtaining an enlarged image by executing illumination perpendicularly to the surface of the skin, superposing plural pieces of scanning lines extending in parallel to the horizontal direction on the enlarged image and photographing them, reading electrically light and darkness on the scanning line and converting it to a numerical value. CONSTITUTION:The subject device is provided with an image pickup head 20 whose tip opening is pressed against the surface of the skin, a body part 21, and a video monitor 22. It is operated by turning on a still picture switch 50 and displays a scanning line on a still screen. As for a scanning line 57, by a binarization processing, the part 61 intersecting with the dark part (a recessed part of the skin) of an enlarged image of the surface of the skin is displayed in black, and the part 63 intersecting with a bright part (a flat part of the skin) 62 is displayed in white. By reading how many black parts (dark parts) 61 there are in each line of the scanning line 57, the data of various skin states is obtained, and by comparing it with a standard value stored in a storage means 54, various skin states are evaluated.
