PURPOSE:To remove clad to levels nearly less than a detectable limit by providing a ceramic filter as a means for separating insoluble solids (clad) from water produced in a cask for use in transportation of used fuel. CONSTITUTION:In an apparatus for treating water produced in a cask for use in transportation of used fuel, as a means for separating insoluble solids (clad), a ceramic apparatus 1 including a ceramic filter 2 equipped with ceramic filter elements 3 is provided. The ceramic filter elements 3 are preferably composed of a surface layer having fine pores and a supporter layer having larger pores. And water produced in a cask is fed under pressure to a primary side chamber 15 of a ceramic filter 2 and is passed therethrough, whereby all clad contained in the water having certain particle diameter or larger is arrested. And then the filtered water is caused to pass through a desalting device to produce treated water. When a cake layer of clad is formed on the primary side of the ceramic filter elements 3 as filtration continues and thereby filtration efficiencies fall, back washing of the filter elements is performed to restore filtration efficiencies.
