PURPOSE:To form a small sized and stable solid-state image pickup element and to simplify an external circuit by using a selector switch to extract signals for one line read simultaneously from an image pickup section from an output buffer via a line buffer. CONSTITUTION:A signal of a photoelectric conversion element Q on a horizontal selection line 11a is read for the first half of a horizontal blanking period and stored in cells corresponding to buffers 16A, 16B via a selector switch 18. In this case control pulses S1, S2 are given to selector switches 18-1, 18-3 and 18-2, 18-4 which are closed in the position of the buffers 16A, 16B. Then a signal of the photoelectric conversion element Q on a horizontal selection line 11b is read for the latter half of the horizontal blanking period and stored in cells corresponding to buffers 16C, 16D. In this case, the control pulses S1, S2 are given to the selector switches 18-1, 18-3 and 18-2, 18-4 which are closed in the position of the buffers 16C, 16D. Then a clamp circuit 14 applies the pulse S1 or S2 at clamping and clamp release. Then the signal is outputted to terminals 22A-22D via output buffers 20A-20D.
