A silver halide photographic material comprises at least one compound represented by general formula (I) (I) wherein R1 represents an electron withdrawing group; R2 represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an amino group, a hydroxyl group, a carboxyl group, a sulfo group, -NHSO2R3, -SO2R3, -NHCOR3, -NR3CONR4R5, -NR3COOR4, -SO2NR3COR4 or -COOR3 (in which R3, R4 and R5 each represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group); L1, L2 and L3 each independently represents a methine group; X represents a sulfur atom or NR6; Y represents an oxygen atom or NR7 (in which R6 and R7 have the same meaning as R3); Z represents an aryl group or an aromatic heterocyclic group; and n represents an integer of 0, 1 or 2, with the proviso that when X is a sulfur atom, Y is preferably NR7 and when X is NR6, Y is preferably an oxygen atom or NR7.
