PURPOSE:To raise the accuracy for recognizing a character and to execute an automatic translation at a high speed, by confirming a description attribute of an input document to be translated, by an operator, and giving it as attribute instructing information, to a recognizing part of an OCR. CONSTITUTION:A scanner 1 scans a document 7 to be translated, reads optically pattern information, and its information is stored temporarily in a buffer memory. The pattern information is displayed on a display device 3. An operator confirms an attribute of each line of the document 7 by a screen on the display device 3, and thereafter, inputs attribute instructing information 61 to a recognizing device 4 from an attribute instructing part 6. The recognizing device 4 receives the pattern information which has been stored temporarily in the memory 2, and recognizes each character by referring to the attribute instruction information 61. In this way, the accuracy for recognizing a character can be raised, and accordingly, an automatic translation can be executed at a high speed.
