PURPOSE:To automatically execute data communication by switching a telephone line to a facsimile equipment side when hand shaking between the main body of a MODEM and a line side is not made successful in the state of interrupting the telephone line to the facsimile equipment. CONSTITUTION:In respect of the number of line catch cycles to a call incoming signal to a main body 14 of the MODEM, the number of line catch cycles for a facsimile equipment 16 is set longer. When the input of the call incoming signal is detected by a ring detecting circuit 26, the facsimile equipment 16 catches a telephone line 12 after the lapse of the prescribed cycles. When the line is caught, the telephone line 12 to the facsimile equipment 16 is cut after the lapse of prescribed time and in such a state, hand shaking for line connection is executed between the main body 14 of the MODEM and the terminal equipment side connected to the telephone line 12. When hand shaking is not made successful, the telephone line 12 is switched to the facsimile equipment 16 side.
