PURPOSE:To shorten the production time of charcoal and increase its yield, by forcibly circulating into a combustion chamber a combustible gas produced from wood in a carbonization chamber to burn the gas. CONSTITUTION:A lid 13 of a carbonization chamber 9 is opened to charge the carbonization chamber with wood 11, and the lid 13 is closed. Then, a pilot burner 4 is ignited to raise the temp. of the combustion chamber 1. Part of the hot gas is discharged through a chimney 5. On the other hand, the remainder is transferred into the carbonization chamber 9 through a fan 19 and a roaster 7, where it is self-burned to bake the wood 11, thereby conducting carbonization through evaporation of water. The gas generated from the wood 11 is transferred to a jet scrubber 27 through a pipe 29. In the scrubber, the gas is absorbed into a crude pyrolignous acid fed through a pump 23 and passed through a pipe 25 into a crude pyrolignous acid in a tank 21 to store a combustible gas on the top of the tank 21. Then, the combustible gas is forcibly circulated into a combustion zone of a pilot burner 4 of the combustion chamber 1 through a fan 19 and burned therein.
