PURPOSE:To deal with all the situations of a subject by providing a third tracking system that two tracking systems of a luminance difference tracking mode and a peak tracking mode are combined. CONSTITUTION:Previous to the selection of the tracking mode, a luminance difference signal DELTAF from a luminance difference detection circuit 34 is compared with a previously set threshold TH1. In the case where DELTAF is larger than TH1 the luminance difference tracking mode is adopted. In the case where DELTAF is below TH2, the peak tracking mode is adopted. When DELTAF is below TH1 and is larger than TH2, a combined tracking mode is adopted. In the combined tracking mode, a subject detecting range is set up between the subject detecting range set up by the luminance difference tracking mode and the subject detecting range set up by the peak tracking mode.
