PURPOSE:To prevent re-recording and to search an unused image recording area by changing conditions of presence of recording of a specific signal in each specific signal recording area and detecting the presence of the specific signal. CONSTITUTION:A camera is made up of an image pickup section 1 applying photoelectric conversion to an object image into a still image signal and a storage section 2 having 20 frames of memory cells storing still image information by one frame. Then a specific signal recording area on which a digital specific signal is recorded is provided in an image recording medium corresponding to each image recording area and a state of the presence of recording of the specific signal in the specific signal recording area is revised by a recording means corresponding to the object image recording to each image recording area and a detection means detects the presence of the specific signal to discriminate the presence of the object image recording onto the corresponding picture recording area to prevent re-recording and then the object image is recorded. An unused picture recording area can be searched.
