Zusammenfassung:To provide a liquid crystal element that excels in initial low-temperature responsiveness without using a polarizing plate, and with which the low-temperature responsiveness hardly degrades in a lightfastness test.SOLUTION: Provided is a liquid crystal element not including a polarizing plate, the liquid crystal element comprising: a pair of electrode substrates composed of a first electrode substrate and a second electrode substrate; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the pair of electrode substrates; and an ultraviolet ray cutoff layer provided on the side of the first electrode substrate opposite the liquid crystal layer. The first electrode substrate is a transparent electrode substrate, and the ultraviolet ray cutoff layer has a light transmissivity of 0.1% or less in a wavelength range of 378 nm or below.
