A method of preventing contact between the anode and residual water in the battery and/or reducing the level of gas in the battery is also provided. Further, an electrolyte for a battery is provided that contains an additive containing at least one organic catalyst. Moreover, a battery containing an electrolyte containing an additive containing at least one organic catalyst is provided.
