To effectively use a tape as far as possible without wasting the same.SOLUTION: A printer 1 comprises: a print mechanism 7 which performs printing for a belt-like tape 5 loaded to a device body according to print data; and a control part 10 functioning as print data provision means which provides print data to the print mechanism 7, residual amount detection means which detects a residual amount of a first tape 5a loaded to the device body, and calculation means which determines a tape length (printing length) of the tape 5 required for printing the print data.
