To provide a portable terminal for acquiring clear video images of a user's face, a video image acquisition method, and a video image acquisition program.SOLUTION: A portable terminal 100 includes: a face determination unit that determines whether or not a face is included in a predetermined area of an image acquired by an image pickup unit; and a video image acquisition unit configured to, when a determination is made that the face is included in the predetermined area, cause the image pickup unit to acquire a video image in a second state, out of a video image in a first state and the video image in the second state higher in image quality than the video image in the first state. The image pickup unit includes a first image pickup unit for acquiring a video image in the first state and a second image pickup unit provided so as to face a direction opposite to a direction in which a display unit for displaying an image faces and acquiring the video image in the second state. The face determination unit determines whether the face is included in the predetermined area only on the image acquired by the second image pickup unit.
