To provide a sensor element that has high water resistance.SOLUTION: There are provided a sensor element 101 and a gas sensor 100 that includes the sensor element 101. The sensor element 101 comprises: an element body 102 that includes a long tabular base part 103 and a measured gas circulation part 15 that is formed on one longitudinal end side of the base part 103; and a porous protective layer 90 that is formed from the one end and covers at least a longitudinal surface portion of the element body 102. The protective layer 90 includes an inner layer 91 that is formed on the one end face and on at least one of two principal planes of the element body 102, and an outer layer 92 that covers the surface of the inner layer 91 and the surface of the element body 102 in a region where the inner layer 91 is not formed.
