To provide a vacuum pump that allows the optimum possible utilization of the performance thereof, while at the same time increasing the safety for personnel working in the area of the vacuum pump or for systems present in the area of the vacuum pump or including the vacuum pump.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a vacuum pump comprising: a rotor rotatable about a rotation axis; a drive device for rotating the rotor; a control unit that detects operation parameter in a protection mode, in particular the temperature of the outer surface of a housing 119 of the vacuum pump 111, and according to a preset, takes one or more protection measures dependently on the value of the detected parameter; and a device for connecting a user interface or the user interface to the vacuum pump 111. The control unit is switchable via the user interface by a user to a neutral mode different from the protected mode.
