To provide a vehicle control device which determines a possibility of a collision with an obstacle with a simple structure regardless of whether or not a second vehicle exists, and to provide a vehicle control method.SOLUTION: A vehicle control device according to an embodiment is provided at a first vehicle having a sensor which detects a situation in a travel direction. The vehicle control device includes a setting section and a determination section. The setting section changes a collision determination condition in the travel direction according to whether the vehicle is in a connection state where a second vehicle is connected in the travel direction or in a non-connection state where the second vehicle is not connected in the travel direction.
