To provide a method for operating a terminal capable of combining and editing face marks purchased by a user into various formats.SOLUTION: A method for operating a terminal in which an application for an instant messaging service is installed includes the steps of: receiving a user selection for an interfacing object exposed to a constant region of a chat window; switching an input mode in the chat window to a mode for generating timeline face marks; generating timeline face marks including in time series a plurality of face marks selected by a user; and transmitting a chat message including the timeline face marks.
