Zusammenfassung:To provide a display device capable of achieving nonlinear gradation expression (gamma characteristics/gamma curves) even when an optical modulator is an on/off binary display device.SOLUTION: A display device includes: a first optical system for generating illumination light whose light emission luminance is variable; a photochromic section which transmits the illumination light from the first optical system and which can vary its transmissivity; a second optical system which includes an optical modulator and which optically modulates the illumination light streaming from the first optical system via the photochromic section by using a pulse width modulation technique; and a control section for controlling the light emission luminance of the illumination light from the first optical system and the transmissivity of the photochromic section in an arbitrary combination.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4 【課題】光変調素子がオン/オフ2値表示デバイスの場合であっても、非線形な階調表現(ガンマ特性/ガンマカーブ)を実現することができる表示装置を提供する。【解決手段】本開示の表示装置は、発光輝度が可変な照明光を生成する第1の光学系、第1の光学系からの照明光を透過する、透過率が可変な調光部、光変調素子を含み、調光部を経た第1の光学系からの照明光を、パルス幅変調技術を使って光変調する第2の光学系、及び、第1の光学系からの照明光の発光輝度と調光部の透過率とを、任意の組み合わせで制御する制御部、を備える。【選択図】 図4
