Zusammenfassung:	To provide a technique of suppressing the degradation of the performance of a composite fiber that contains carbon.SOLUTION: Provided is a composite fiber comprising a metal carbide-containing fiber 2 containing a metal carbide as a main component and a carbon layer 4 formed on the surface of the metal carbide-containing fiber, wherein the carbon layer covers 90% or more of the surface of the metal carbide-containing fiber and has protrusions on the surface, the protrusions being present in 5% or more and 35% or less of an observation visual field of 2 μm×2 μm on the surface of the composite fiber.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 【課題】炭素を含有する複合繊維において、性能の低下を抑制する技術を提供する。【解決手段】金属炭化物を主成分とする金属炭化物含有繊維２と、金属炭化物含有繊維の表面に形成された炭素層４と、を含む複合繊維であって、炭素層は、金属炭化物含有繊維の表面の９０％以上を覆うと共に、表面に突起を有し、複合繊維の表面において２μｍ×２μｍの観察視野に、突起が５％以上３５％以下存在している。【選択図】図１
