Zusammenfassung:To provide a polarization beam splitter capable of reducing size and weight compared with a conventional one.SOLUTION: A polarization beam splitter 1 including a light transmissive base material 2 and a hologram layer 3 provided on the surface of the base material can separate S polarized light from light incident into the hologram layer through the base material. The base material has a rear surface 22 facing a front surface 21 having the hologram layer and a side surface 23 connecting the front surface and the rear surface; and the hologram layer includes a hologram 31 capable of diffracting circularly polarized light incident into the hologram layer from the outside of the base material through one of a part of the rear surface or the side surface to generate S polarized light having an extinction ratio of 50:1 or more toward the other one of the part of the rear surface or the side surface.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 【課題】従来に比べて、小型化及び軽量化できる偏光ビームスプリッタを提供する。【解決手段】偏光ビームスプリッタ1は、透光性の基材2と、基材の表面に設けられたホログラム層3とを有し、基材を介してホログラム層に入射した光からS偏光の光を分離できる偏光ビームスプリッタであって、基材は、ホログラム層が設けられた表面21に対向する裏面22と、表面と裏面とを接続する側面23とを有し、ホログラム層は、裏面又は側面の一部のいずれか一方を介して基材の外部からホログラム層に入射した円偏光の光を回折させて消光比が50:1以上のS偏光の光を裏面又は側面の前記一部の他方に向けて発生させるホログラム31を有している。【選択図】図1
