Zusammenfassung: | To make it possible to reduce optical loss even when light to be modulated has a high power.SOLUTION: A semiconductor optical phase modulator 10 converts single-mode light into multi-mode light, and has a first area A1 where a mirror image is formed due to interference of light and a second area A2 where the power density of the light is lower than that in the first area A1. The semiconductor optical phase modulator comprises a multi-mode waveguide 12 for propagating the interfered light, and a pair of channels 14 and 15 provided to face each other so as to sandwich the propagated light with the second area A2 and each having a higher doping concentration than a doping concentration at a peripheral area.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
