Zusammenfassung:To provide a method for producing a polyarylene sulfide that yields little gas during heating and has excellent melting stability without adding metal compounds.SOLUTION: A polyarylene sulfide prepolymer containing at least 50 wt.% or more of a cyclic polyarylene sulfide represented by formula (A) and having a repeating unit number of m=4-50 in the formula, is heated in the presence of a biphenyl-type halogenated aromatic compound that is 0.001-20 mol% relative to sulfur atoms in the polyarylene sulfide prepolymer and includes a linking group that is any electron-withdrawing group selected from a sulfonyl group, sulfoxide group, and carbonyl group.
