PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide alkyl ether carboxylic acid having excellent foamability and rinsability and high sebum washability or salt thereof.SOLUTION: The present invention provides alkyl ether carboxylic acid represented by the general formula (1): R-O-(CHCHO)-CH-COOM (Ris a C10-C16 straight-chain alkyl group, n is the number of 0-20, M is a hydrogen atom, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or organic ammonium) or salt thereof, where Rincludes two or more straight-chain alkyl groups, Rhas an average number of carbon atoms of 10.8-12.5, the component of n=0 is contained by 8-17 mass%, the component of n=1 and the component of n=2 are contained by 31-38 mass% in total, and the components of n≥6 are contained by 10-25 mass% in total.SELECTED DRAWING: None 【課題】起泡性及びすすぎ性に優れ、皮脂洗浄性の高いアルキルエーテルカルボン酸又はその塩を提供する。【解決手段】次の一般式（１）Ｒ1−Ｏ−(ＣＨ2ＣＨ2Ｏ)n−ＣＨ2−ＣＯＯＭ （１）（式中、Ｒ1は炭素数１０〜１６の直鎖アルキル基を示し、ｎは０〜２０の数を示し、Ｍは水素原子、アルカリ金属、アルカリ土類金属、アンモニウム又は有機アンモニウムを示す）で表されるアルキルエーテルカルボン酸又はその塩であって、Ｒ1は２種以上の直鎖アルキル基を含み、Ｒ1の平均炭素数が１０．８〜１２．５であり、ｎ＝０の成分を８〜１７質量％、ｎ＝１の成分とｎ＝２の成分を合計で３１〜３８質量％、ｎ≧６の成分を合計で１０〜２５質量％含むアルキルエーテルカルボン酸又はその塩。【選択図】なし
