PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a biaryl compound having carboxyl groups or an anhydride thereof by coupling aromatic compounds having a carboxyl group(s) or an anhydride thereof with a high catalyst turnover number (TON).SOLUTION: To provide a method for producing a biaryl compound, comprising coupling aromatic compounds under an atmosphere where oxygen exists using a catalyst which comprises: at least one metal compound selected from the group consisting of palladium and rhodium; a bidentate compound which can form a complex with the metal compound via two nitrogen atoms or via one nitrogen atom and one oxygen atom; and a copper compound. 【課題】 本発明の課題は、カルボキシル基を有する芳香族化合物又はその無水物をカップリングさせることで、高い触媒回転数ＴＯＮで、カルボキシル基を有するビアリール化合物又はその無水物の製造方法を提供することである。【解決手段】 本発明の課題は、酸素が存在する雰囲気下で、パラジウム及びロジウムからなる群より選ばれる少なくとも１種の金属化合物、２個の窒素原子又は１個の窒素原子と１個の酸素原子により前述の金属化合物と錯体形成することができる二座配位子化合物、及び銅化合物を含む触媒を用いて、芳香族化合物をカップリングさせることを特徴とする、ビアリール化合物の製造方法によって解決される。【選択図】 なし
