Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the fuel economy of an internal combustion engine while realizing the prompt learning of a reference position in a learning control and the pressing of a variable valve mechanism to an end of an operating range in a normal control and the like.SOLUTION: An electronic control device 21 controls an operating position of a valve timing variable mechanism 14 making variable a relative rotation phase of an intake cam shaft 10 to a crankshaft 8 with a retard position-side end of an operating range of the mechanism 14 assumed as a reference position. The electronic control device 21 executes a learning control to press the valve timing variable mechanism 14 to the end of the operating range and to learn the operating position of the mechanism 14 as the reference position. Furthermore, the electronic control device 21 executes a normal control to control the operating position of the valve timing variable mechanism 14 based on the reference position learned through the learning control. The electronic control device 21 sets an operating speed of pressing the mechanism 14 to the end of the operating range in the normal operation to be lower than an operating speed of pressing the mechanism 14 to the end in the learning control. 【課題】学習制御における速やかな基準位置の学習、及び、通常制御等での可変動弁機構の動作範囲の端に向けた押し付けを実現しつつ、内燃機関の燃費を改善する。【解決手段】電子制御装置21は、クランクシャフト8に対する吸気カムシャフト10の相対回転位相を可変とするバルブタイミング可変機構14の動作位置を、同機構14の動作範囲の遅角側の端を基準位置として制御する。電子制御装置21は、バルブタイミング可変機構14を上記動作範囲の端に突き当て、そのときの同機構14の動作位置を基準位置として学習する学習制御を実行する。また、電子制御装置21は、学習制御を通じて学習された基準位置をもとに、バルブタイミング可変機構14の動作位置を制御する通常制御を実行する。電子制御装置21は、通常制御で同機構14を上記動作範囲の端に突き当てるときの動作速度を、学習制御によって同機構14を上記端に突き当てるときよりも遅くする。【選択図】図1
